Japanese Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) features shiny, stiff, evergreen needles arranged in tufts that resemble the ribs of an umbrella (hence its name). The unique texture adds lots of visual interest to any yard. These trees can even be used in the art of bonsai gardening. They prefer full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Be sure your yard can accommodate the size, as some varieties can reach up to 30 ft. tall. Japanese Umbrella Pine is hardy in Zones 4 – 8.
